Ásgeir S. Sigurðsson’s Accordion Collection

In 2008, the couple Ásgeir S. Sigurðsson and Messíana Marsellíusdóttir donated the Ásgeir S. Sigurðsson Accordion Collection to the Westfjords Heritage Museum. At the time, the collection comprised approximately 140 accordions of various sizes, types, and periods from throughout the history of accordion development. The oldest accordion in the collection dates from around 1830 and is in remarkably good condition, complete with its original case.

The collection contains many outstanding pieces, including numerous accordions that once belonged to well-known Icelandic accordion players. Ásgeir has made a special effort to collect instruments with a long and distinguished history in Icelandic music. The collection continues to grow and now contains more than 220 accordions.

A selection of accordions from Ásgeir’s collection is currently on display on the third floor of the Turnhúsið (Tower House). However, the Westfjords Heritage Museum no longer accepts accordion donations except under special circumstances.
